The Push To The Finish Line

Hi Everyone in the internet world,
Here in the Heritage Program office we are getting ready for the final Summer festival which is the Navajo Festival. The office is buzzing with the sounds of clicking keyboard keys and the swooshing of paper being folded and put into acceptance letters and artist packets. We are just busy bees here trying to make sure this festival go seamlessly. We the heritage team are so excited for this festival and no its not because it is the last one for the summer. We are excited because there will be many great artists here to show off and sell there amazing art works. The Navajo Festival will be the weekend of August 4th and 5th from 9am to 5pm at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

*Calling all Navajo Artists*:
If you still want to join in this festival that shows off the cultural importance of the Navajo Nation there is still time just get in your application ASAP!!!! For the artists there is a judging that is on Thursday. You can enter 3 pieces for the judging that have to be dropped off by 12 noon on Thursday, August 2nd.

Last Day of the Hopi Show

Hello Everyone!

The Hopi festival is well on it's way with various dances such as; the Clown dance, the Palhikmana dance and the Konina dance. The children are quite entertaining in their clown outfits performing their dance, you can also see them still dressed up running around the museum. Don't miss out on the beautiful headdresses and garments worn in these dances, it is truly a cultural experience. We also have traditional music performances by Donald Dawahongnewa and Tiffany Bahnimptewa. On a different note, (pun intended) we have a musical performance by Casper and the 602 Band, which primarily Reggae. If you're interested in finding out more about the Hopi tribe and their culture, there are various talks on Pottery, the language and the Hopi way of life.

If you're not interested yet, don't miss out on the food! We have the traditional Piiki bread that is made from  blue corn. We have delicious fry bread that most everyone knows and loves. Various food vendors have lined themselves up in the front parking lot, ready to serve visitors (hopefully, such as yourselves)!

Artists have booths up all around the museum selling amazing pieces! The Hopi are incredibly friendly people and great conversationalists, so come out and meet them! Anything from painting to carving and sculpting to glass blowing and jewelry! You have to head on out and see it for yourselves on the last day of the Hopi festival!

We are off to Sam's Club today to food shop for the Hopi Festival.  We will still be taking artwork all day today so no worries for all the Hopi artists who are dropping off for judging and consignment. So wish us luck on our shopping outing.

Hello Everyone, thank you so much for checking out our blog. I must say these interns are just super and are doing a great job keeping up with all the multi-tasking and fast paced Heritage Program activities. The Hopi festival opens in 8 days!!! We have been getting calls from artists all day wondering if booths are available so I am anticipating a full house with over 70 Hopi artists. Check in tomorrow for an updated list of artists and the schedule for the weekend. Looking through pictures I found this one from 2008 when the Nuvatukay'ovi Sinom Dance Group (San Francisco Peaks People) pulled me on stage to dance with the clowns on Sunday morning. So fun!! We're Back from Hopi

Hi Everyone,
We are back from our Hopi art collection trip. It was a great success! We got carvings, pottery, baskets and so much more. It was tons of fun meeting with all the artists that make the wonderful art work so we could connect a face with the pieces. So all you Hopi artists, make sure to get your artworks to the museum before the festival or make sure to get yourself a booth.
