The Heritage Program at the Museum of Northern Arizona

The Heritage Program features four festivals as well as monthly insight presentations. They highlight the cultures of the Colorado Plateau and encourage communication and the exchange of ideas between visitors, educators, and artists.

Hello everyone!
Our latest project as Heritage Program interns is a bit of new ground for us- we have been assisting with the creation of a new exhibit in conjunction with the Hopi Festival. The exhibit will feature pottery from the Hopi that was acquired after 1984. Along with the pottery there will be photographs of Hopi pottery in festivals past, and that's where we came in. Sorting through hundreds of photos dating back to the first Hopi festival in 1930, we selected images of our pottery demonstrators to put into the exhibit.
As we busily prepare for the Hopi Festival on July 6th and 7th, packing envelopes with name tags and table markers, we hope everyone visiting the Flagstaff area, and those who reside in Flagstaff and surrounding areas will come join us in what is sure to be the best Hopi Festival in 80 years!

Interns out!

Zuni and Hullabaloo and Hopi, Oh my!!

Hello again!
It's hard to believe but Zuni Festival 2013 has already come and gone! We had a busy weekend but it was full of opportunities to learn more about the Zuni culture. We would like to extend a thank you to all of our artists for coming out to make our festival happen, and another big thanks to everyone who volunteered- we couldn't have done it without you!

We also worked at Flagstaff Hullabaloo, showing people about our mountain lion exhibit and making paper flowers with the kids. We had a lot of fun demonstrating how far a mountain lion can jump, what they can see compared to humans, and even what scat on the Colorado Plateau looks like.
Now we are gearing up for our next festival, Hopi, over Fourth of July weekend. So far we have made a trip up to the Hopi reservation and will return on June 17th and 18th for our collecting trip! We hope to see you at the festival!

Interns, out. :)
